Hello

My name is Belena, and I am a PhD candidate conducting a research study to examine an intervention to teach and improve handoff for nursing students. I started my career as a nurse in 1997.  Patient handoff was one of the most difficult and complex skills I had to develop as a new graduate.  It wasn’t taught or practiced back then as a skill, and for the most part, it still isn’t today.

Why Patient Handoff?

I chose patient handoff, otherwise known as shift report, because it has been one of the leading causes of patient harm for over twenty years. Many factors are involved in completing a handoff, and sometimes, there is a large amount of information to process.

Research Design

My research aims to answer the following question:

Is a teaching intervention an effective method for teaching a complex skill such as handoff?

Using an experimental design, I am piloting a teaching method for student nurses who have reached a particular stage in their studies.

Participants will be placed in either one of two groups. One group will receive the intervention, and the other group will not.

The study is conducted online for about an hour with one participant at a time via Zoom. Participation is completely confidential.

Interested?

If you are a student nurse in a prelicensure bachelor's or entry-level master’s program and are interested, I would love for you to contact me or set an appointment to answer a few questions to see if you qualify.

The first 30 participants who fully complete the online session will receive a gift card as a monetary token for their time.
